Europe @ Birmingham Academy, 18-02-11
Since bouncing back onto the scene in 2004, Europe have made a real fist of things, with fine live performances and a top release in the form of last year’s Last Look At Eden. One year on from their last UK tour, the Swedish rockers were back, and we were there to see it.
Kicking off with the excellent title track from their most recent record, it became clear from the off that Europe were here to put on another top show. On stage they pack power, precision and rock star posing into an excellent set that has everyone jumping.
Europe have a great balance of material to pick from, whether it’s hard rocking numbers like ‘Scream of Anger’ and ‘Superstitious’ or ballads like ‘new love in Town’, every song ticks all the right boxes for fitting in to a great rock show. Mix that in with an excellent version of ‘The Loner’ as a tribute to the late Gary Moore and a drum solo with a sense of humour, Europe are a great band to spend Friday evening with.
As if that wasn’t enough, to round things off with a mighty pow – the one and only ‘Final Countdown’, which still sounds as much as classic as it ever has and gets the whole room moving. Note to other bands – this is how to do it.
