Trapped Chiliean miner Yonni Barrios’ wife is waiting for him at the exit to the mine… with his mistress.

When your husband is trapped underground in the mining accident that went round the world, you know it’s going to be a stressful time. But when you hold vigil outside the mine, you don’t expect to have his mistress next to you.

Mrs Barrios, 56, heard Yonni’s name being called out in the throng of loved ones by Susana Valenzuela, 50, the other woman. Still, both women are holding their ground.

"Barrios is my husband. He loves me and I am his devoted wife. This woman has no legitimacy.” Naturally Valenzuela has the answer you always hear, that he was ready to leave his wife for her. "We are in love. I’ll wait for him."

Yonni, your life has got a lot more complicated!

Abbey Road’s cover holds a secret. Not The Beatles, but tourist Paul Cole lurking in the background.

While photographer Iain McMillan had just ten minutes to snap the famous walk across the zebra crossing for the Abbey Road sleeve, Paul Cole was taking a break on his trip to London.

“A bunch of kooks… walking across the street like a line of ducks,” he thought, not knowing that his picture was about to be taken and copied tens of millions of times around the word.

He died in 2008, aged 95. So if people ever ask if the album picture meant Paul was Dead, well the answer, now, is yes.

Is the normal reaction when you split up with your girlfriend to make a perfect copy of her as a sex doll?

It’s certainly the reaction of a (for the moment) anonymous middle aged man, as the Australian Herald Sun reports. He took pictures, sizes and the request to make a plastic clone of her to the Temptations adult factory on Italy.

The facsimile isn’t identical mind you. As per his wishes, she has a much improved bust, and her rear has a bit more shape to it.

And the cost? An eye watering $18,000. But at least she can be moved into any position that a human can. Hmm…

Hat tip to Asylum, more at the Herald Sun.

Feeling good about yourself today? Happy you managed to get into work without spilling your coffee?

Well that’s nothing compared to Aaron Fotheringham.

He’s a thrill seeker, looking to do stunts, tricks and downright cool stuff. In his wheelchair – because he has had spina bifida from birth.

Did that stop him doing a double backflip in his wheels? Not at all.

Lambeth Council pleading that “they forgot” to page EDF Energy.

Not sure if anyone on a domestic bill could get away with forgetting to pay their energy bill for six years, but that’s what the Council in Lambeth have managed.

The electric bill to run the street lights has been running up the clock for sixz years, and now EDF Energy have sent “the boys” around. In an amazing piece of generosity, they’ve decided to wipe out half the bill and ask for just £280,000. Why?

They reckon they’ll have more chance of getting some of the money back if they ask for less.

I hope those behind in their Council Tax in the London borough get the same treatment.

Stunning time lapse photography of the Earth at 17,239 miles per hour.

This is why we go into space. Not to spread “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” on the surface of the Moon, but to realise how delicate where live actually is.

Shot by Don Petit from the vantage point of the International Space Station, this is the Earth as it’s never been seen before – time lapsed, and set to the music of Goldfrapp.

Just enjoy the view, okay?

British start-up set to help serendipity and conference scheduling as you share your jolly’s with your friends.

Billing itself as the social conference directory, the newly launched Lanyrd website is aiming to help you find great conferences to attend, help you discover what’s hot while it is still running, and catch up on conferences you’ve missed or attended but were a bit too worse for wear after the opening night at the bar.

Set up by Simon Willison and Natalie Downe, it looks at your friends on Twitter, does some magic in the background and pulls up what’s coming up, what’s happened before, and guides you to wards the conferences and events that are appropriate to you.

It’s either some very smart programming, or magic. But it works no matter what method they’re using, so congrats.

More at Lanyrd (which even has the obligatory Web 2.0 mis-spelling of the name)..

CLOTHES
This week Fashion wise I’m loving crop tops. Stripes are very fashionable this summer too. Go for any navy blue and white striped tops (which is what I call Sailor stripes), with some French type writing like ‘Oh la la’ or ‘Je t’aime’ Its very chic and you can wear it for going out or just chilling out
I would say go to Miss Selfridge, New Look or Topshop.

MAKE UP
For casual day make up, the ‘no make up’ look is quite popular. Put a touch of concealer under your eyes, a bit of eyeliner and voila! Your ‘no make up’ look is done

If you’re going out, I would recommend the ‘smoky eyes’ look. Basically you need to blend in colours, grey and copper or brown and copper,( I would recommend grey not brown for people with brown eyes). Put the darkest eye shadow on your lids then use the lighter one on your creases, using a brush blend the colours together, and add some mascara, voila, you’re done!

MUSIC

Present Hit:

At the moment I think Dynamite by Taio Cruz is quite popular with my friends at the moment!

Baby by Justin Bieber has been too played now (EDITOR: And watched 300m+ times!)

Future hit:

Pack Up by Eliza Doolittle!
Video can be seen on Youtube

What’s hot and what’s not!
Flaming hot: Crop tops with ‘sailor stripes’ (navy blue and white stripes)
Sizzling hot: Getting a tan from holiday
Hot: Curly sea hair
Warm: Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream COOKIE DOUGH
Luke warm: Cold weather in England
Cold: Over played songs
Freezing cold: red nails and blue eye shadow & pineapple hair, hmm, Vicky Pollard much?

Brazilian Roberto Carlos’s 1997 free-kick against France was referred to as “the goal that defied physics”. The ball curved so sharply that it left goalkeeper Fabian Barthez standing still.

Now, a French team of scientists have discovered the trajectory of the goal and developed an equation to describe it.

They say it could be repeated if a ball was kicked hard enough, with the appropriate spin and, crucially, the kick was taken sufficiently far from goal.

“We have shown that the path of a sphere when it spins is a spiral,” lead researcher Christophe Clanet from the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris told BBC News.

And there we have it, it’s all in the spiral..Watch the wonder goal below.

The web discovers the F-22 Raptor owns the double rainbow effect.

Yes, the idea of a Double Rainbow has really taken off now. The original video with Paul Vasquez may already be an internet legend, but we here at The Daily Dust think this shot shoots down Vasquez and climbs to the number one slot.

Photographer (and Air Show fan) Bernardo Malfitano describes the shot:

An F-22 at Miramar at the top of a loop. He is pulling so many Gs, the low pressure air over the fuselage (that is "sucking" the airplane into the loop) gets cold enough for the water to condense… And the angle is just right for sunlight to undergo total internal refraction and make rainbow colors (sic) around the airplane (although I had to under-expose quite a bit for the effect to be visible).

Halloween costume planning stars early for R2-D2 and his Doctor Who fascination.

It’s the ultimate robot in disguise as the diminutive R2-D2 sneaks into a BBC props cupboard to get himself a bit of respect and attention in something that’s more Darth Vader than Mech Droid.

In actual fact this is a cracking piece of design from Simeon Wells and is available from TeeFury.

Whistle up another one for us!

What are the logistics required to mount such an operation? It might be a pomotional competition question in the latest Asda magazine, but is it actually possible?

I’m not happy with either Asda or I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter at the moment.

I’m sitting down last night with the Edinburgh Fringe all but finished, when my wife points out a competition in the Asda in-store magazine (Sep 2010 issue) for I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. It’s a multiple choice question that asks:

Approximately how many tubs of “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” would it take to spread over the Moon?

10

500

5.7 million

And it’s not the fact they say in the line above that it would take 5.7 million 500g tubs, it’s just the sheer stupidity of the idea. It’s just silly, The logistics behind such an operation don’t bear thinking about.

Well actually they do.

Because when I get an idea to do something, boy do I get an idea to do something.

Let’s assume that you’ve managed to find the plans for the Saturn V rocket and the Apollo spacecraft to sit on the top. And you’ve found the money, fabrication and a Health and Safety officer that will turn a blind eye to some of the more intriguing problems of flying to the moon and covering it in I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter.

Then you have to assume you’ve managed to design, test and build the theoretical Lunar Payload Module variant – a descend only truck like monstrosity to drop supplies to the surface of the moon. It has a maximum payload capacity of 11,000 lbs and needs to be escorted by a manned crew to lunar orbit before being remotely flown to the surface to land next to our buttering crew, who are already safely on the surface.

So we have one lunar flight to get said buttering crew onto the surface (and which will also bring them home). Then we need to add in some Truck flights to get the “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” to the surface.

When I say some, I mean 572 launches. Assuming no explosions.

Okay, we now have a crew on the Moon. We have to ensure they have a regular supply of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter via the Lunar Payload Modules. Thankfully this is a one way trip and with no aerodynamics to worry about, we can get 9979 tubs of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter per launch.

I’m guessing they remembered to bring a knife, if not, we’ll put a spare in each module.

Now we have the Astronauts (working alternately on seven hour shifts, which is the space suit capacity), how long will it take to do the buttering? Given that the average 13cmx10cm slice of toast takes 12 seconds to butter, an Astronaut can cover 1 square metre of the Moon every 15 minutes and 20 seconds. Round that down and we have a rate of 4 square meters an hour.

Given the surface area of the Moon, I can now declare that it would take one man 1.08 billion years to spread I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter over the entire surface of the Moon.

What if we’re not going by the traditional method of spreading? Can we get a muck spreader to the surface of the moon (err, given we’re shipping 11,000lb of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter at a time, i don’t think that would be a problem). Hooking up a spreader to the back of a lunar rover, with a top speed 13kph and able to spread a trench of butter roughly 5m on either side of the rover, that brings it down to a more manageable 16,615 years.

Obviously I’m discounting a few factors here, such as a steady supply of air, water, food and other supplies. A Lunar Module is rated for around three days on the moon, supplying all the water, food and drink, heat and shelter needed. We’ll need to drop a flight every three days to our buttering crew. That adds up to just over two million flights.

So to expand on the answer that Asda and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter supplied, yes you can cover the moon with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, and I’ll assume that your figure of 5.7 million tubs is accurate, but you also need:

Two astronauts (and medical facilities to either keep them alive or raise a family)

16,615 years of round the clock operations.

A functioning lunar rover and muck spreader, adapted to spray I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter for 16,615 years (any replacements will require an additional launch).

2,022,065 (successful) Saturn V launches, each requiring a crew of three astronauts to fly the payloads to lunar orbit and land them remotely for the buttering crew.

So yes, you could cover the Moon in I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, but even if you started such a project, I doubt you’d see the completion of it in your lifetime.

Next time, can you run a more sensible question to give away a “fun filled lunchbox?”

To be fair, I did approach Unilever, the company that owns I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter about the competition, and I asked how they worked out the number of tubs needed. They claim 5.7 million, but it would be nice to see the working of that calculation in the small print. I also asked if they had any idea how long it would take and how much it would cost.

I’m still waiting for a reply.

The best burger in the capital? It’s in a van that lurks around Peckham car parks.

The burgers use 28-day aged prime chuck steak, which is used the same day (or turned into meatloaf or chilli); the cheese is a popular brand but isn’t labelled; and he works with a local baker to make the perfect burger roll.

And if you can find the Meat Wagon, maybe you can try one of Yianni Papoutsis’s gourmet burgers.

Lurking in the car parks and streets of Peckham – and making the occasional foray to festivals, major events, and Brixton – the kitchen in a van is slowly making a name for itself in the world of Street Food, a world set to explode thanks to coverage in The Independent this morning.

And Papoutsis is an artist.

The idea is that the whole burger works together. It’s an amalgam of the ingredients. That’s something McDonald’s does really well in the Big Mac. You don’t taste bits, you taste the whole. No matter what you think about McDonald’s – you can’t argue with that. When you bite into a Big Mac, it tastes unmistakably like a Big Mac. You have to slow down and think about the separate flavours to notice things like the sauce and onions.

I’m down in London in a fortnight, I think I might go on a little exploration.

August is normally a no news month, this year it finished on a high with four stories that normally wouldn’t make the papers hitting the headlines yesterday..

World gravy Wrestling Championship

Gravy-makers Bisto provided 2,000 litres of past-its-best-before-date gravy for the contest, which raised money for the East Lancashire Hospice.

Great plug for Bisto though!

Covered in the Metro

World Testicle Cooking Championships

Spectators looked on as teams of chefs prepared a range of bull, boar, camel, ostrich and even kangaroo testicles.

A load of old boll..

Covered in the Metro

World Hovercraft Championships

The world’s top hovercraft drivers gathered in Northamptonshire for the event.

We didn’t even realise there were “top drivers”.

Take a classical singer and ask her to listen to some metal, and you find that the singers are far more powerful vocally than you could possibly imagine.

When you hand a classically trained voice tutor some music to listen to, you expect to get some honest opinion back, especially if she;s never even heard of the bands before.

That’s what Invisible Oranges did, and voice tutor Claudia Friedlander was the recipient. What would she make of some of the most distinctive voices of Heavy Metal?

In short, she’ liked four out of five, and would really like Rob Halford to come down to her studio. But perhaps it’s her thoughts on Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson that will come as a shock to some, and no surprise to others:

There is a visceral dramatic intensity driving this singing. Many rock and metal singers are tenors who sustain much higher, much longer than operatic tenors are ever required to. It’s not just the microphone that makes this possible. These guys are singing their guts out with incredible commitment. Intention is a very powerful thing.

Notice the rasp that occasionally colors his sound. This is an effect that is totally distinct from strain – his entire larynx and throat needs to be completely loose and free to respond this way. In some of the following examples, you’ll hear singers deliberately making their voice more shallow, shrill, nasal or “harsh”. If they know what they’re doing, they can set up all of these effects without creating resistance and strain. You can tell the difference in much the same way you would listen to a classical singer – free singing is like a massage, while entangled singing makes you sympathetically tighten up your own throat.

And her thoughts on the fifth singer, Ozzy Osbourne?

Fourth guy is just bad throaty singing… Made my throat tight to listen to him. How long did his career last?

“So how much do you know about Opera?” Kim Thompson pops the question, before asking for ten minutes of your time so she can explain.

And as she points out, you don’t even need to go to the opera to find out, you just need an embedded YouTube video and you’ll learn all you need to know about the so-called greats.

So says Chortle, after examining all their reviews from the Edinburgh Fringe.

In a survey that is sure to raise some eyebrows, comedy website Chortle has taken its reviews of the stand-ups at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe and made a shocking discovery.

Men are funnier than women.

Now hold on a minute, this is a big statistical leap of faith, and on just 272 data points the “winning” margin of 3.04 stars for female comics against 3.27 stars for males is well within the bounds of sampling error, which in this case is 6%.

But it’s a funny headline, so we’re going to let it pass.

Also of academic interest is the comedy value of shows on <strike>Jonathan Pryce’s</strike> Peter Buckley-Hill’s Free Free, which in many cases have more stars than at paid-for venues such as The Caves or C Venues.

Our critics gave in-depth reviews of 272 shows at the Fringe. Excluding one-off shows and those with mixed casts, almost 22 per cent were from female performers. And the overall average star rating was 3.21.

Analysis of the star ratings also showed that, broadly, comedy fans get what they pay for, with a steady increase in quality with ticket price. However, the most expensive shows – over £15 – underperform; while those on the Five Pound Fringe punch marginally above their weight.

More numbers and charts at Chortle, and for the record, we’re not telling Tiff Stevenson (above) about this…

Digital versions and website look ups could mean no more printed editions of the dictionary.

Strangely sad news from the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) publishes Oxford University Press, as they announce that they may cease publication of the OED. While the current 20 volume edition of the dictionary still sells, the 30,000 units purchased is not a huge amount.

Compare that to the hundreds of thousands of subscribers a month going through their website, and the technological death knell is being sounded. CEO Nigel Portwood broke the news to The Sunday Times:

"The print dictionary market is just disappearing. It is falling away by tens of percent a year."

Obviously OED as a brand will continue, and the information will be available online and the smaller sized dictionaries will still be produced (the imaginatively titled Shorter OED) but we here at The Dust think that not printing the most comprehensive dictionary in the world is something we’d miss.

…even if we can’t afford to pay the £750 recommended retail price.

A British company are about to launch a little black dress that can recieve and make telephone calls. London based CuteCircuit are yet to disclose the price but state it will be released in 2011. From the CuteCircuit website:-

The M-Dress is an elegant silk jersey dress that is also a functional soft electronics mobile phone. The M-Dress accepts a standard SIM card and allows the wearer to receive and make calls without carrying a cellular phone in their pocket or purse. Simplicity is elegance.

The M-Dress (Mobile Phone Dress) was designed after our research showed that very often phone calls are missed because mobile phones are quite awkward to carry, especially for women, that have garments with small or no pockets. To allow women to stay connected while remaining stylish, CuteCircuit designed the M- Dress. A mobile phone in its own right but built out of soft circuitry.

The wearer inserts their usual SIM card in the small slot underneath the label and the dress is ready to be used, having the same phone number as your usual phone. When the dress rings, the simple gesture of bringing your hand to the ear will allow the sensor to open the call and when done talking the gesture of releasing the hand downwards will close the call.

The dead march on Parliament to demand equal rights with the living.

Remember the promise of a Zombie invasion on the House of Commons? If you were around central London yesterday then you might have caught sight of the lumbering mass demanding more consideration for the dead.

The demands were relatively clear, and placards asking for ‘rights for the dead rising, too’ alongside messages proclaiming ‘zombies are people too’ and a request to ‘bury the coalition’.

Harry Cole is the soul that’s leading the rabble, "With the coalition treating the electorate as zombies, we thought we’d illustrate the strength of feeling by bringing our cause direct to Parliament."

More on the Campaign for Undead Rights and Equality (Cure) can be found at their website. The living can also apply to join the party – equality isn’t just a word, you see.

More at votecure.com.

A homeowner in Cricklewood, North London, had a shock on Thursday morning when when a young woman knocked on her door leaving a boa constrictor in a pillow case.

Bizarrely, when the homeowner answered the door, the woman asked for ‘Andrew’ before walking off, leaving the moving pillow case on the doorstep. She called the Police!

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘If you are the owner of the boa and wish to be re-united with your pet, or have information about where he has come from please call police on 0300 123 1212.’

We’d imagine that not many people are missing a boa constrictor this morning.

Edinburgh Comedy God award renamed the Fosters Funny Four, possibly to save face with the sponsor.

Remember all the fun that the Edinburgh Fringe watchers have been having with the voting for the “Comedy God” of the last thirty years – a new publicly voted award to associate a big name with the awards in their first year of sponsorship from Fosters?

The key phrase there is publicly voted – once Stewart Lee decried the contest and inadvertently anointed Frank Chicken, the internet’s sense of humour did the rest. The Anglo-Japanese dance act soared into the lead of the poll, and never looked back.

With no announcement at the main Comedy Awards ceremony on Saturday (when all the press were gathered), the idea that Frank could do it grew stronger. As Sunday progressed with no news, that noise grew.

Finally confirmation arrived late in the day via a press release that magnified the Top 4 into “Fosters Funny Four” and hoped nobody noticed the change of focus.

So Fosters get their TV comedian name to be associated with (as we predicted, Tim Minchin, Michael MacIntyre and Russell Howard), the internet has their pound of chicken flesh, and whoever is doing the PR for the awards next year needs to avoid this kind of mess.

The winner? Stewart Lee.

His mention of Frank Chicken and subsequent promotion of an act that wasn’t scheduled to appear at Edinburgh was enough to hand him the Malcolm Hardee Cunning Stunt Award for 2010.

A £74 million, ten year project to apply a new coating to the Forth Bridge to prevent the 8,300ft icon from rusting, will end shortly, a year ahead of schedule, meaning the bridge will be fully painted for the first time in it’s 120 year history.

Painting the bridge has been a never ending task since it was opened in 1890. Thankfully, due to the new paint, it will not need another coat for forty years.

The project will finish at Christmas.
