In the days before Twitter and Facebook, the public were using the humble postcard to share their thoughts and opinions.Between 1901 and 1910, the picture postcard, containing an image on one side and room for writing (not a lot more than 140 characters) on the other, was sent around the UK almost 6 billion times (an average of 200 per Brit) researchers at Lancaster and Manchester Metropolitan universities have calculated.

During this time, there were up to 10 postal deliveries in major cities a day, allowing people to actually communicate in a reasonably fast way.

The study concludes: “We suggest that the low price and efficiency of the Edwardian postcard has meant that as an informal written communications technology it was not equalled subsequently until the 21st century.”

Julia Gillen and Nigel Hall, the authors of the report, will present their findings at the British Educational Research Association (BERA) conference in Manchester today

Video footage of Edwardian London has been discovered by Professor Ian Christie in Canberra, Australia.
The footage was shot in 1904 as part of a travelogue for Australians who were curious about life in London.

Prof Christie said: “It’s a rather clever mixture of what we would expect to see – such as the Embankment, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square – but it also has these wonderful close ups of individuals.

“There’s an old lady sleeping rough on a bench, children encouraging a dog to swim in the Thames, children paddling in one of the ponds in St James’s Park.
Watch the video below to see what London looked like in 1904.
